Frequently Asked Questions
The following are some of the more common questions and answers regarding standalone distribution.
Q: Do I have to contact FairCom prior to each deployment?
A: No. You will execute a Standalone Deployment Amendment that gives you the right to deploy your software that uses the standalone model, and report and pay one time per year for those deployments.
Q: I use c-tree for an application that is used within my company. Do I need to count deployments to internal users? A: Yes. When we use the terms "deployment" or "distribute" we include all internal and external use.
Q: A 30-day evaluation edition of my application can be downloaded from the Web at no charge, but we do charge for the full version. How do I calculate my distribution fees? A: Demonstration and evaluation copies will not be counted toward the total number of executables allowed under the license. However, if you offer a "lite" edition that does not expire but simply has fewer features than a "professional" edition, you would need to include downloads of the "lite" edition in your executable count.
Q: I have read that the standalone pricing is based on the number of "executables." My application is made up as several executables, but it is really only one application. Do I really need to count the individual executables? A: Applications comprised of multiple executables can be counted as a single executable as long as they serve the same functional purpose for the application and are not priced or sold separately. If the executables are for add-on applications that are sold separately, you must count these individually.
Q: My application is provided to resellers who in turn duplicate the CDs and sell them to end-users. My resellers are paid a flat amount regardless of the quantity sold, so I don't know how many executables are out there. What fees do I pay? A: We recognize that our software is implemented in a wide variety of ways where determining the total number of executables deployed is not feasible. If you can't confirm the number of executables deployed, you must contact FairCom to pursue alternative licensing models. Our goal is to be flexible and work with our developer partners to create simple and straight forward licensing arrangements. Please don't hesitate to contact us at any time.
